On Second Thought...

Perhpas I was wrong about this being the perfect moment for Gore. There has been some talk of a Nobel Peace Prize for gore this fall, and such a win would, in fact, be the ideal time for him to announce his candidacy.

Last year there were 191 nominations though - also, why would he get a peace prize?

Political reasons, mainly. In 2005 they awarded the prize to Mohamed ElBaradei (head of the international atomic energy agency) partly as as a rebuke of US foreign policy and the Bush administration.

I think it would be a smart time to announce. I don't think he'll do it, though, because he knows from close up what the constraints of the office are. I think he's happier now, saying what he truly believes. Michael Moore was on Bill Maher the other night (being interviewed about "Sicko," which looks like it's just incredible) plugging for Gore to run becasue he's right about global warming, he's right about health care, he's right about Iraq, and it would be a sort of redemption for the country from the debacle of 2000, in which the loser won and the world has pretty much gone downhill since. But I remember when Gore ran in '88 as a conservative, race-bashing Jesse Jackson. He's been through so many personality trasnplants, I'm afraid it would happen again. I actually think Obama and Edwards would make better Presidents.
